one of the entrances to access the abbey, the chapel and the cloister..The Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, located on the borders of the three provinces of Poitou, Anjou and Touraine, is one of the largest monastic cities inherited from the Middle Ages. Classified Historical Monument since 1840, it is, since 2000, registered with World Heritage of UNESCO with the whole of Loire Valley. In a green valley a few kilometers from the Loire, near Saumur, Fontevraud is an essential step of the Loire tourism. A step, but also a destination ... For a place by essence unique! From its creation, there will be a thousand years ago by an eccentric monk, the Abbey is a "very singular foundation". A place of social mix but also ... sexual! It is an abbess who runs the Royal Abbey, which houses women and men divided between the four priories: St. Mary for the "contemplatives", St. Mary Magdalene for the lay sisters, St. John of the Habit for the monks and Saint-Lazare for the sisters who look after the lepers. The 13 hectares on which extend the various buildings, now plentiful places of life (artists, visitors and congressists cross there), testify to the importance of an Abbey which was directly attached to the royalty. The recumbents of Aliénor d'Aquitaine, her husband Henry II Plantagenêt and their son Richard Cœur de Lion, exposed in the abbey church, recall this glorious past. Walking along the cloister, visiting the chapter house or the kitchens of the Royal Abbey, is also to understand what was the daily life of the nuns who inhabited it. Finally, imagine that these places gave way, in the 19th century, to one of the toughest prisons in France ...
